About Grand Strand Cycling
The Grand Strand Bicycle Club (GSBC) is a 501(c) (3) non-profit corporation founded in August 2021. GSBC has established a four-fold mission of advocacy, hosting bicycle-friendly events, supporting youth cycling, and providing training and education to grow a bicycle-friendly Grand Strand.
Advocacy
GSBC advocates for safe multi-purpose transportation corridors for commuters and leisure cyclists. The club accomplishes this by incorporating safe practices in youth programs; supporting legislation that improves the cycling environment, and; promoting infrastructure improvements that expand the safe use of cyclists whether it is mountain biking, trail systems, or bike lanes alongside vehicle traffic lanes.
Bicycle-Friendly Events
Since 2021, the club has partnered with the City of Myrtle Beach Bicycle and Pedestrian Committee to sponsor “Bike the Beach”. “Bike the Beach has been held in 2022 and 2023 with proceeds used to fund Youth Cycling.
Youth Cycling
GSBC supports youth cycling by funding activities and cycle clubs. In 2021, $2,000.00 was donated to the Horry County Composite Youth Mountain Bike Team to support the current activities and growth of youth cycling in Horry County. In 2022, Bike the Beach proceeds to fund youth cycling by providing $ 7,000 to establish a youth bike club at the Boys & Girls Club of The Grand Strand. Members volunteer and support the “Hot Wheels Club” activities during the school year.
Training & Education
In 2022 GSBC Board members organized and participated in the Horry County Trail Summit, a cooperative effort between the GSBC, Coastal Carolina University, and the university’s Bicycle Advisory Committee (BAC). Held May 11, 2022, the Summit was attended by city/county planners, parks & recreation personnel, and cycling enthusiasts. The Summit was also attended by trail planners from state agencies including SC DOT and SC PRT.
In 2023, members advocated for a strategic vision of a Rail Trail connecting Conway, CCU, and Myrtle Beach to Loris, SC; a 34-mile trail that would parallel the rail corridor. A meeting was recently held with local stakeholders discussing funding opportunities for portions of the Rail Trail that have been identified as feasible and can be constructed in the Conway area. A pitch was made to the Horry County RIDE IV Committee to fund a feasibility study of the 34-mile corridor.
The Club plans to establish a cycling safety education program by having certified trainers among its members.
Please join the GSBC to support and sustain the growth of the Grand Strand Bicycle Club and advocate for a Rail Trail/shared-use path connecting Conway, CCU and Myrtle Beach, Membership is open to the public for an annual fee of $25.00 for individuals and $35 for a family of four.
